The Lingo of 3.0

On May 8th I’m going to be on a panel at Digital Hollywood. Knowing that conferences are all about knowing the new lingo I thought I’d better dig into what the visionaries are are chirping (tweeting?) about web 3.0 Even as I type the number 3.0 I’m sure I’m already behind - 4.0 anyone?
1. It’s about the cloud.
Content will be accessible wherever the end consumer wants to reach it. No more home vs. office computer. Everything will be in the cloud.

2. Curate the Crowd.
Gordon Gould CEO of social shopping site ThisNext –believes that technology – via a product graph that connects likeminded shoppers is the future of etail. It turns online shopping into a discovery experience instead of a search, click, and purchase experience.

3. Web 3.0 Will Be About Reducing the Noise.
We’re drowning in inputs. I need to know what is important, and I don’t have time to sift through thousands of Tweets, emails, rss feeds IMs a day to find the few items I really need to know and act on. The next wave of technology will be about the information filter.

4. Someone Else’s Content Is King
Web 2.0 was about personal expression. Facebook, MySpace, YouTube etc etc. Web 3.0 will be about figuring out how to monetize that openness. the next chore for media outlets will be trying to sell ads against other people’s content in addition to their own. The consumer value resides in the curation of content. The challenge is to grab enough consumers’ eyeballs to get advertisers interested. Welcome to the “universe of boundless competition.â€
