How Green Will She Go?
Posted on | July 8, 2008 |
In a meeting with our investors from Greenscape Capital last week one of the partners asserted that in the future wearing a non-organic cotton shirt will be as heinous as if he lit up a cigarette mid-meeting. It’s a vision I buy into, but I question how quickly it’s going to happen. Currently a pair of “it brand” Shakara Eco-Luxury White Denim runs ₤220, or about $439. That’s tough for a recession shopper to handle.
A few months ago we polled our readers asking - How Green Will You Go?
Here’s a sampling of the results:
Would you buy vegan bags and shoes instead of leather?
yes - these chic new styles look just like leather 51%
maybe - I’m not totally convinced, but some pieces aren’t bad 26%
no - sorry, saving the environment stops at my closet 23%
How green would you go when it comes to your feminine hygiene choices?
no way. the applicator is my friend 50%
However there are a few vocal advocates in the comments -
I use Natracare Organic cotton tampons, liners and intimate wipes. I used to use mainstream brands until I realized that they contained chemicals I would not want in my body or damaging the planet…
Would You Toss Your Eco-Unfriendly Cosmetics?
Definitely – My bathroom is going to be a completely green zone by Earth Day. 4%
Maybe – I’ll get rid of the worst offenders and try to buy more eco-friendly products. 78%
Don’t think so – I still love my mass-produced makeup. 19%
For the green goods to meet the chic shopping masses they’re going to have to compete on ease of use, price and fashion quotient. Like my Greenscape guy suggested - it’s going to have to become a social norm rather than a special purchase. I can’t wait to see how the results change when we poll next year. Perhaps my shoes will only be made from grass fed cows….a girl can dream.
