Real You: It feels good to feel good

Posted on | January 23, 2009 |

Ok, face it. It’s been a magical week. Whether you voted for President Obama or not, the feeling, the mood, the excitement has been palpable. Everywhere. I had the fun of watching the Innauguration with the entire Jones Middle School where two of my four are students. Mind you, we were in the auditorium and the cafeteria and I wasn’t sitting NEXT to my 8th grader (mom, no…)  but close enough to smile and share the moments. (I sat next to my 6th grader. He humors me still, as he’s the baby. I, in turn, spoil him. But that’s for another post.)

The words I’m using in this post are at the heart of marketing to women  - and truly - at the heart of great marketing. We know the Obama team is magical when it comes to branding and of course, they extended the brand beautifully throughout the festivities. But you know who else made my heart sing this week?

Pepsi. The My Generation ads made me smile, and watch, every time they appeared. I know it may be about cashing in on Obama-mania, but I don’t care. They make me smile, and feel good. And Starbucks. The Are You In ads featuring MC Yogi with it’s call to community service and creative fonts and music. Ahhh. And, it does feel good to have a president who acknowledges White House.gov as more than a landing page and who will use it as an actual communication and transparency tool; with young daughters who use Flip Minos and digital cameras; and well, I just hope we see more inspired, hopeful, positive emotion-based advertising. Because in times like these, it feels good. The movie industry’s surprise hit, Slumdog Millionaire, is another example. If you haven’t seen it, you need to. And you’ll feel really good when you leave.

Just imagine turning on the television and feeling really good about what you’re watching, everyday?
